Marcella Buchholz, age 92, of Clear Lake, SD passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2012 in the Deuel County Good Samaritan Center.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2012 in the Trinity Lutheran Church, Clear Lake. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Clear Lake. Visitation will be Thursday, June 21st from 5 – 7 p.m. in the Houseman Funeral Home, Clear Lake.
Marcella Katherleen Buchholz was born on May 18, 1920 to Henry and Ida (Landmark) Halverson at the family home in Scandinavia Township, Deuel County, SD. She was baptized and confirmed at the Highland Lutheran Church of Brandt, SD. After Marcella graduated from the Brandt High School in 1938, she continued and completed her education at Eastern Normal School in Madison, SD. She then taught school for two years at the Lincoln School District #4 in Deuel County.
On August 10, 1941 Marcella was united in marriage to Lester Buchholz at the Brandt Highland Lutheran Church parsonage, and they then made their home on the Buchholz homestead ten miles west of Brandt. Marcella was a member of the Hidewood Lutheran Church, the Hidewood Ladies Aid and the Up and Going Extension Club. She also helped with the local 4-H program.
In 1975 they retired and moved to Clear Lake, SD. Marcella worked at the Estelline Hospital, Raven Industries and the Deuel County Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Marcella was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Trinity Ladies Aid, and the Trinity Treddlers. She also spent many hours doing volunteer work both at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home and through the church. Lester passed away on January 5, 2009. Marcella passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 in the Deuel County Good Samaritan Center at the age of 92 years, 1 month and 1 day.
Marcella enjoyed playing whist with the neighborhood card club and she and Lester played a lot of pinochle. Marcella enjoyed cooking, crocheting, sewing, crafts, reading at bedtime and spending time with her family and friends. She crocheted many afghans. Marcella also enjoyed trips to visit relatives and she and Lester made several trips to Canada and Arizona.
Marcella is survived by her three children: Harlan (Mary) Buchholz of Omaha, NE; James (Diana) Buchholz of Estelline, SD and Kayleen (John) Hansen of Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Marcella is preceded in death by her husband, Lester Buchholz, parents, two sisters and one brother.
