Betty Steele

Betty Mae Steele, 82, of Gary, SD died Thursday, March 22, 2012 in a Watertown, SD Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 26, 2012 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Gary. Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery, Gary. Visitation will be Sunday, March 25th from 5 – 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Prayer Service at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Gary.

Betty was born April 29, 1929 to Harry and Margaret (Pottoff) Bierne in Gary, South Dakota. She was raised in Gary and graduated from Gary High School.

On June 15, 1953, Betty was united in marriage to Eugene Steel in Gary, SD. Following their marriage, until 1958, they lived in Watertown where Betty worked for Montgomery Ward. They then moved to Lake Cochrane where they owned and operated Betty and Gene’s Resort for 26 years. In 1967, they moved into Gary, SD where they enjoyed raising their family. On Thursday, March 22, 2012 Betty passed away at the Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown, SD at the age of 82 years, 10 months and 22 days.

Betty was a member of the St. Peter’s Catholic Church where she was active in the Altar Society and CCW. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Gary. Betty liked to work with antiques and as an avid sports fan, loved watching local sports as well as the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband Eugene Steele, Gary, SD; two children: Jason (Jan) Steele, Gary, SD and Lexie (Mike) Glover, Huntington Town, MD; three grandchildren: Justin (Jessica) Steele, Kaleb (Brenda) Steele and Gabriel Glover; two sisters: Lois Shaeffer, Watertown, SD and Donna Neville, Cheyenne, WY and nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; one sister Dorothy Hornstein and one brother, Raymond “Buzz” Bierne.
